Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia was officially named the fastest player in the world.
Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia told the club’s official website in an exclusive interview that he believes teammates Wayne Rooney and Adnan Januzaj are faster than him.
The Ecuadorian international joined the Red Devils for a reported £16 million fee the summer of 2009 after impressing immensely at former Premier League outfit Wigan Athletic.
Equipped with agility, strength and above all else incredible speed, his marauding runs down the right flank at Old Trafford were perfectly suited to the United philosophy under former boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
Such was his speed, FIFA decided last season to once and for all examine who the fastest footballer on the planet was while in possession of the ball.
Names such as Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Theo Walcott made the list, but it was Valencia who ultimately came out on top – recording a speed of 35.1 km/h.
The 29-year-old, however, seemingly isn’t so sure on the facts as when quizzed on United's fastest player he named two of his teammates he deems to be quicker.
“I’m not sure [who the fastest United player is]. Wayne Rooney is quick, and so is Adnan Januzaj. I think the fastest is between one of those two,” he said, quoted by benditofutbol.
Valencia has made 200 appearances in all competitions for United since joining in 2009, scoring 21 goals and winning two Premier League titles.
He has started seven league matches under boss Louis van Gaal this season, alternating between right wing and right-back depending on personnel changes and injuries.
